The cabinet cam lock is a small lock that can secure cabinet doors by simply turning a key inserted into it, also known as a cam lock. It is commonly found on filing cabinets, electrical distribution boxes, and mailboxes. Its compact design operates by rotating a metal tongue (cam) to engage the cabinet body. The mechanism is straightforward, requiring a 90 to 180-degree rotation to open or close.

 

How was it locked?

 

The core of the cabinet cam lock lies in "rotating to drive the cam to lock the cabinet body." Its internal structure is not complex, primarily relying on the coordinated operation of several components:

 

* Key and Lock Cylinder: After inserting the key, the tumblers inside the lock cylinder align, allowing the cylinder to rotate freely.

* Rotation: When the lock cylinder rotates, the metal tongue (cam) at the tail end follows and transitions from the "retracted" to the "extended" position.

* Locking the cabinet door: The extended cam latch will engage with the edge of the cabinet or the lock hole, preventing the door from opening; turn it back in the opposite direction, and the cam latch retracts, allowing the door to open.

 

The biggest advantage of this design is its space-saving feature, as the majority of the lock body is concealed behind the door panel, with only the lock head exposed. It can be securely locked with just a single turn, unlike conventional locks that require multiple rotations.

2. Where is it mainly used?

 

The cabinet cam lock, due to its compact size and low cost, covers almost all scenarios requiring simple cabinet locking:

 

* Office and Home Use: Most commonly found in metal filing cabinets, lockers, drawers, and storage cabinets, used to protect personal items or important documents.

* Industry and Power: Widely used in distribution boxes, cabinets, and control boxes, it can also provide dust-proof and waterproof protection for internal circuits when combined with sealing strips or waterproof covers.

* Public facilities such as mailboxes, vending machines, and computer cabinets also use this type of cam lock. ‌

 

Based on management requirements, it can also be categorized into **keyed alike** (one key opens all locks) and **keyed difference** (one key opens one lock, offering high security), with some high-end models supporting hierarchical key management.

When selecting a cabinet cam lock, don't obsess over the parameters-focus on whether the material and installation dimensions match your cabinet door

 

Check the material durability:

* Zinc alloy: The most commonly used, offering high cost performance, suitable for indoor dry environments such as office filing cabinets.

* Stainless steel: Strong rust resistance, suitable for outdoor distribution boxes, damp workshops, or corrosive environments such as seaside areas.

* Engineering plastic: lightweight and insulating, suitable for lightweight equipment or scenarios requiring insulation. ‌

 

Measure the installation dimensions:

Common lock diameters include 16mm, 19mm, and 22mm.

Before purchasing, measure the door panel cutout size and thickness to avoid installation issues.
